%INTRO TurboLog 2.xx help, last updated 07-Nov 1992
SECTION 1.
INTRODUCTION
============
WELCOME TO TURBOLOG 2!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TurboLog is a fully integrated logging program, morse generator and cluster
access system. The purpose of this on-line help facility is to give you quick
guidelines about using the program. It is not intended to be a complete
tutorial, and if you need further information you should refer to your user
manual.
This help facility is "context sensitive", which means that you will come to
different parts of the file, depending on what you were doing at the time you
asked for help. However, you can scroll backwards and forwards anywhere else
you please from that point.
%OPENING
THE TURBOLOG OPENING MENU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At this menu you can select which part of the program you want to use. You
can always get back to this menu by pressing ESC one or more times.
F1 accesses the logbook functions. Logging QSOs, producing listings, QSL
operations, morse code generation etc. are all available via this key.
F2 allows you to perform packet functions such as connecting to your local
cluster node and other services such as your BBS. Note that you can get
to MOST of the packet functions from the Log side of the program too.

function.
%TLMORSE
MORSE KEYER OPERATIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is menu item F3 from the Logging operations menu.
Morse Keyer Operations allows you to do the following things:
1. Edit any morse messages file and/or set it as the file currently in use.
You can have any number of morse message files, but only one can be in
use at a time. You can edit an existing file and set it as operational
without actually saving the file to disc.
2. Edit any morse profile and/or set it as the profile currently in use.
The morse profile contains information such as the various preset speeds,
mark/space and spacing characteristics and sidetone features. You may have
many different predefined profiles if you wish.
%TLQSL
QSL OPERATIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is menu item F4 from the Logging operations menu.
You can print QSL labels and also edit the actual format of the labels from
this menu item:
F1 Print QSL labels or QSL data file.
You can select Bureau/Direct/All, print order (QSO or callsign), date

%UTILITIES
LOGBOOK UTILITIES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This menu allows you to perform a number of TurboLog support activities. It is
option F6 from the Logging operations menu, or F5 from the Packet operations
menu.
F1 Set the system clock. Various function keys are defined to help you
rapidly set the system time.
F2 Edit the TurboLog configuration. Changes made are applied
as soon as the menu is redisplayed. If you edit serial port
parameters then you must restart TurboLog.
F3 Edit your Personal Directories. It is MOST IMPORTANT that you rebuild
the Personal Directory files after any editing operations.
F4 Edit your DXCC worked database. A sub-menu allows you to:
%DXCCUPDATE
F1 Edit COUNTRY.DAT (for if a new prefix turns up)
F2 Edit AREAS.DAT (Used if a country starts using call areas)
F3 Edit CALLS.DAT (Normally maintained automatically, but you may
occasionally want to intervene manually
F5 Edit an individual DXCC country's worked status
F6 Rebuild DXCC database and/or define a new DXCC period
F8 Help
F5 Perform TurboLog import, sort and rebuild operations on the log
database. (see below)
F6 Prune packet scroll files. As packet data comes in, these files will
grow. Eventually you will want to reduce their size using this option.
F7 Establish links to TNC and/or Transceiver. This is only valid
if the TNC link is down, or a transciever interface has been
specified and that interface is down. It is blank otherwise.
F8 Help. Displays this help page.
%TLIMPORT
IMPORT, INDEX AND DXCC REBUILD OPERATIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
General WARNING! These operations can all become quite time consuming as they
require one or more complete scans through the log database. The sort
operation is particularly lengthy.
F1 Import from other logging programs. You can import from another
TurboLog file, from G3WGV Contest Log, K1EA CT, EI5DI Super-Duper
and from any other ASCII file that contains a basic minimum set of
logbook fields.
F2 Sorting the database. This operation completely sorts and rebuilds the
database. It deletes void QSOs, and orders valid QSOs into date/time
order. This is useful if you have imported a file out of date
sequence. Finally, the index files are rebuilt. It can take a
L-O-N-G time!
F3 Rebuild DXCC database. It is possible for the DXCC worked database to
get out of step with your log. This option scans the log and rebuilds
your DXCC and QSL status database. You can optionally define a new
DXCC period.
F4 Rebuild Index Files. If you have made edits to your log, then the
various indexes (callsign, band, mode, DXCC country etc) may become
inaccurate. This will affect the results you get in list operations.
F4 performs a scan and rebuild. It can be quite lengthy, particularly
if you chose to rebuild ALL the index files.
%PRUNE
THE PRUNE FACILITY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Allows you to maintain the three files used to store information coming from
your TNC. These files can grow quite quickly, particularly the BASIC and
MULTICONNECT files if you use unconnected monitoring for long periods.
When you select this option, a menu appears showing the size of each of the
files in bytes. You can then elect to reduce the size of any or all the files
to a specified number of lines.
As a guideline, each line of text in these files occupies 82 bytes on your
hard disk.
%EXTERNAL
EXTERNAL DATABASES & GATEWAYS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is option F7 from the Logging operations menu, or F6 from the Packet
operations menu. You can also access it via Alt-E from the logging window.
Up to ten external databases/gateways can be defined. Option J is normally a
DOS gateway. If you exit through this gateway, be careful not to run programs
that will conflict with TurboLog, such as other terminal emulators. To return
to TurboLog, type EXIT. All Cluster information is buffered so nothing will
be lost (unless you stay in DOS for a very long time and fill up the buffer!)
THE HELP MENU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This menu topic brought up this help file for you.
detail below. To select an option, you can do any of the following:
Use cursor up/down keys to position to the required option, then Enter
Press the appropriate function key
Press just the number of the appropriate function key
LINKING, CONNECTION and DISCONNECTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You will be disconnected (that is, the TNC is not in communication
with PacketCluster) when you start up TurboLog. Select F1 to get a menu of
Clusters to which you can connect. You can define up to four PacketClusters
in TURBOLOG.CNF, and each may be via NetRom nodes or other indirect access
methods. See the file TURBOLOG.CNF for more information.
One of the connect options can be to a "Cluster" called DEMO. This is a simple
emulation program which allows you to run TurboLog without being connected to
PacketCluster. You must still have a TNC connected to use the emulator.
When you are connected, this menu topic is changed to allow you to disconnect
from your PacketCluster.
If TurboLog has been unable to establish a link to your TNC, then this menu
topic is changed to allow you to try the link again.
